- Trem King: It was a pleasure meeting Sheldon the inventor at NAMM. Sheldon has set out to alleviate a
number of problems commonly encountered on tremolos...and he actually succeeded in various
aspects! For example: one can comfortably play oblique bends with perfect intonation, since, unlike what
happens with other tremolos, when the fretting hand bends a string on a Trem King equipped guitar, none
of the other strings goes flat. I have been waiting for an intelligently designed tremolo for years and not a week
goes by without my students asking me for the ultimate solution in that matter. So believe me,
I am interested! The Trem King is a serious effort, and I believe Sheldon is on to something big.
Unfortunately, the two guitars equipped with the Trem King that I tried at NAMM did not stay in
tune. Interestingly, the guitar player playing on the Trem King website's video, despite his good intention to
musically demonstrate the various features, seems to keep running into the same issue.
I am willing to attribute that to the current absence of a locking nut in the design. In
my experience, playing with the same string length is essential to the guitar staying in tune,
therefore a locking nut is a must. So, I am not sold on the Trem King in its current version,
but I still want to let all of you know about its existence because I believe Sheldon will come
up with the goods. I really hope that in the future, there will be a version of the Trem King
tremolo with a locking nut and fine-tuners on the bridge. This could very well be the dream
machine we have all been waiting for! Somebody is going to get rich. Stay tuned www.tremking.com
